My youngest granddaughter, Meghan, 12, just received an invitation from Duke University to take the SATs with the high school seniors. If she scores high enough, she'll be invited to participate in a summer program at Duke.
We already love Duke in my family for fighting so hard for Mike's life and giving us two more years with him, so we're all bursting with pride that Meghan has made this program.
And I'll bet she'll score high enough to make the program. She's driven -- has been since she was in infant. I remember seeing it in her eyes the first time I held her. She will accomplish everything she sets out to do.
Peyton, her older sister, has a 3.7 GPA. She's a sophomore in high school who gave up a weekend at Grandma's so she could study for a test. Straight As come easily to Meghan; Peyton has to work for them -- and she does.
Her daddy had the same potential -- Johns Hopkins University offered him the same thing when he was in middle school. But he was too much like me. There were too many other things dsitracting me in high school for me to get As. I got Bs and Cs and graduated.
Trey is still in grammar school, but he is in the gifted and talented program. He's also quite the comedian. We'll see which track he takes as he gets older -- scholar, comedian or both.
