Not again

Danny's in the hospital. He was seriously burned at work tonight and he's been transferred to the Augusts, Ga., burn unit. He has second-and third-degree burns on his face, neck, arm and chest.

As far as I know, he's not in critical condition, but last time he was burned at work, it was second- and third-degree burns over 30 percent of his body, mostly on his legs. They sent him home with nursing care for those burns, so this scares me.

I've already lost one kid this year.

With big business, it's all about the bottom line and the loss of a worker is just collatoral damage.

It's all about greed. That's been all that's important in this country since 1980. It's all about me and damn the community. People don't matter unless they can contribute to the bottom line.

Meanwhile, the owner of the mill is making his profit and Danny's pay will be just 60 percent of his normal pay -- before overtime. In all, he'll get less than half of his usual paycheck.

I'm heading to the burn center in the morning. They say he'll be there a couple weeks at least and the company has graciously offered to pay for a hotel room for Jennifer next to the hospital. I'll get a room at the same hotel, although I'm pretty sure their bottom line won't allow my room to be paid for.

I'm so sick of this greed. Why can't people see it? Why is the presidential race so close when the Republicans and their deregulation craze got us into this mess? Why did I have to lose one son and God knows whether my only surviving child will survive?
