I finished!

We did it. All four of us finished, despite the 90-plus-degree heat. I was worried about Phil, but he made it. In fact, as far as I know, everyone did. Boyle and I finished in about 48 minutes, averaging a 16 minutes a mile, which isn't a terrible pace for walkers. We ran the last 50 yards so people could get pictures of us looking athletic.

But the pavement was so hot it burned my feet through the shoes and socks. I have blisters on the balls of my feet. Three miles is nothing to me -- I hike that much or more all the time, but not on hot, hot pavement.

It was fun, and I'll do any 5K that allows me to walk, even if it's in 90-degree heat. I have to say, though, I prefer hiking in the woods.

Danny called today to say he talked to a lawyer about the way Mike was (mis)treated at Memorial Health in Savannah. Since they've pretty much blown me off about making a statement that they won't tolerate failure to inform a patient of an existing medical condition -- they say it's too broad a statement -- I won't stop Danny from doing what he feels he needs to do. He wants to sue and then donate any proceeds to a charity that helps people get medical care. He believes that money is "the only thing they understand."

I had hoped they would work with me at least look like they want to improve care, but maybe that was naive. I wanted to keep it positive, but I want even more for people to be able to get the care they need. No one should have to die because they can't get access to care.
