Moving toward the rally

The date for our health care rally in Savannah is getting closer -- it's less than a month away now. Janet and I were talking about it tonight and I'm getting a little nervous. She's still perfectly calm.

I sent press releases about the rally to several media outlets in Savannah and one of them sent me back an e-mail saying they want to do a story before the rally and talk about Mike and Life o' Mike. I had a vision a couple months ago of clutching a photo of Mike and standing in front of Memorial Health with the TV cameras. I'm still pretty angry about how badly Mike was treated there and how they blew me off after he died, but I'm not going to stand there and blast them. I won't stoop to that level.

Besides, the problem is far bigger than Memorial Health. They can't afford to treat everybody who doesn't have health insurance.

So, in holding to Mike's request, we will keep it positive. The rally is to ask for government to do something about our broken system, and that's the topic we'll stick to. We need people's stories to he heard -- story after story after story. There are 200,000 families out there with stories of loved ones who died prematurely because they didn't have health insurance.

It's time to stop talking and start doing something about our broken system.

The rally, by the way, is in Daffin Park in Savannah, 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. Be there, and wear plaid -- Mike's favorite color.
