(In response to a question about when is the best time to start potty training from the mother of a 3-month-old)
Three months is a tad early to start. But the time will come. Honest.
Different kids are ready at different times. My older son practically trained himself when he was just over 2. I baked a batch of cookies and told him he could have one every time he used the potty (I am not above bribery). He only had one accident after that.
But he always liked to be clean, so he was relieved to have conttrol over it.
As for my younger son, I was afraid he would graduate high school in diapers. He just didn't care. Cookies didn't work. He was over 3 before he finally caved in and started using the potty.
Each of my grandchildren was different -- the girls all trained at about age 2, and my grandson was a little later.
As a rule, girls train a little earlier than boys, but it's all about when they have control over bladder and bowel muscles.
How can you tell? Kids usually send signals when they're ready. They express an interest. Be ready to pounce when they do.
I used a small potty chair so they could reach it without help. I sat them on it after bath time or after breakfast starting just before they turned 2. I have photos of Danny carryint it around the house just after I bought it. No big deal. In fact, don't make a big deal about it unless they do something, then go crazy with praise.
I remember my sister sending me a letter when her son got onto the potty and went all on his own. (This was in 1971 -- no e-mail back then.) It was a big day.
