Peyton called tonight. She's still struggling with geometry. She's trying to get it. but it's just out of reach.
I know that feeling. I had to take geometry twice.
"Gramma, have you ever used geometry?"
I told her no, but then I realized quilting is all about angles. Still, it's not about theorems, proofs, trapaziods and parallelograms. Maybe I'll call her tomorrow and tell her I use it in quilting and inspire her a little.
I spent the afternoon in the garden. I bought a couple of trellises and planted morning glories -- Michael's favorite flower. I had to clear out some grass behind the flower bed in the back yard to make room, then I hauled mulch around the yard. As has become tradition, Rob bought me three cubic yards of mulch for Mother's Day. I know, it isn't very romantic, but I love getting it.
So, now I'm a little sore. I've been working out a lot, but I guess I don't use the same muscles one uses digging and swinging a pickaxe to clear out grass or hauling a big wagon full of mulch and spreading it. I also spent a couple hours cutting up a tree that fell a couple months ago. The chain saw needs repairing, so I used bow saw. It's quite a workout to saw through 10 to 12 inches of wood.
Peyton was a little concerned.
"Gramma, you're what -- 51?"
"55"
"Ohmygawd, Gramma, you're way too old to be doing that kind of stuff!"
No, it's what keeps me young. Digging in the dirt is such a wonderful, basic pleasure. I can't wait to see the trellises covered with morning glory blooms.
